Now vs. Then

Then: We left our front doors unlocked ALL the time. Night or day. The front door was always unlocked. We trusted our neighbors & treated them all like ‘ohana.

Now: HELL to the NO! Our doors are locked once we get home! Our neighbors are chronic’s who smoke crack. Trust? What’s trust?

Then: We could sleep outside under the stars, in our neighbors yard. Without the fear that some stranger would come to hurt us.

Now: I won’t even let my son play outside after dark, unless we’re out with him! People are crazy & yes they all smoke crack!

Then: We could walk around barefoot  & drink water from the garden hose.

Now: He better have his slippahs on & HELL no to drinking form the garden hose. I’m getting myself a bottle of water! Who know’s what crawls in & out of those things!

Then: People would shoot you the shaka when you let them cut in front of you in traffic.

Now: People shoot you the finger and ride your ass if you use your blinker and you made sure there was enough room for you get over in their lane.

Then: The only people on welfare, were the people who REALLY needed it. They used it correctly & they (seldom) took advantage of the system. Mom’s used food stamps to buy food for her children & dad’s worked hard for what little they had. The kids were grateful for a stick of gum, because they knew that’s all that mom & dad could afford.

Now: Every Mary, Nani, Cuchk, & Nohea is on the system. Taking advantage of it like it’s going out of style. Standing in the grocery store with their 2 wagons full of “name brand” food, hapai w/#7, with her 6 kids running around swearing, with hanabata bubbles, dirty feet, no slippahs, crying fo one soda, mom’s wearing her 445413456 Hawaiian bracelets & her baby daddy’s sitting outside in his Navigator, lifted, flow master exhaust system, bose stereo system, blu ray dvd player w/8 - 9 inch tv screens playing the latest DVD & bumpin’ Usher’s OMG. 

I miss the good ‘ol days =(

Random thought

Growing up we lived in a 2bed/1bath house. I shared a room with my brother & sister. My parents didn’t pay rent. We didn’t have a lot but life was good. I ate mangoes, tangerines & star fruit right off of the trees. I know how to husk & crack a coconut with my hands & a rock. I ran around barefoot most of the time & I could climb a tree like a monkey!

I miss being a child. I miss being able to depend on someone other than myself. I miss the innocents of not knowing how bad the “real world” can be. But I am glad that my parents have taught me how to survive on my own. I am glad that I still have them in my life so that even when life does happen, I can call and thank them for teaching me how to deal.
